Looking for an all around card for a computer build.

Want to keep the card cost as cheap as possible.

Will be used for DVD's and some gaming.

What do you recommend?

5200 is $75

8500/9100 is a lil more

5200 is a better future card, but the 8500/9100 is better for today.

Oh... also...

A lot of different makers are producing the FX5200. Who has a reputable product? Chaintech, Evga.com, XFX, etc..

Which is better the ATI 9100 or the FX5200? They are about the same price.

Visiontek Radeon 9100 128MB from CompUSA: $100 - $20 MIR until Saturday. IMO, this is the current best buy. I can't say that with absolute authority, though, as I haven't yet seen an FX5200 using the Det44.03's compared to a 9100 (or 9000P, which is slightly slower than the 9100).

I myself am probably going to get the 9100, because I'm not sure the 5200 will be faster in the settings I envision using (10x7, AF), and I don't think I'll find a review or numbers to prove otherwise by Saturday. That and the 9100 will probably have better 2D quality.

Edit: Hrm, looking back, this TR article did in fact compare an FX5200 to a 9000P, and the FX looks to be slightly superior. This complicates my position, as I know the 9100 is faster than a 9000P, but I don't think it's fast enough to overcome the FX5200's newfound speed. The FX5200 is now more tempting, as the thought of being able to use both AA and AF at 10x7 in some games is very appealing. Decisions, decisions.

Do you care about fan noise? If you do, go with a fanless Radeon 9000/9200 (non-Pro) or FX5200 (non-Ultra)

If you really don't or the rest of your system makes noise (*cough*WesternDigitalharddrives*cough*) Radeon 8500LE and 9100, are good choices. Pretty much what everyone else is saying. :)
