I'm trying to gather a list of interesting people and events for children so the library I work for can buy books that children will find interesting. The age range would be from 6-17 or if you can give some examples and list the age range that would be fine as well.

Example: Martin Luther, Benjamin Franklin, WWII, Hindenburng(?) crash, etc.

LMK if I can be anymore precise on my directions.

Buffalo Bill
Harriet Tubman
The Wright Brothers
Ben Franklin (I know you already named him, but he is a very interesting person)
Amelia Earhart

as far as events:
WWII > WWI
civil rights battle in the 60's (if there is a fair and balanced book describing the events)

for 5th or 6th grade above, start with Homer....tell them the story of Trojan War. this will get their interest. then to socrates, plato, aristotle, etc. the start of western civilization.

for kids , try to tell them who invented what. like....light blub, plane, car, etc. this is fun, at least I liked them when I was a kid.

Yeah... I remember an awesome history lesson done like that when I was 8:

The history of flight, starting from the first Montgolfier hot air balloons over Otto Lilienthals glider experiments, the Wright brothers breakthrough up to Whittle's nifty jet invention.

The real kicker was, who gave me the lesson and where that lesson was held! It was in the cockpit of a 747 flying over the Atlantic and it was held by the entire cockpit crew, with each of the 3 members taking turns. I was probably having as much fun as they were. my parents say I spent over an hour in their "office" listening to them... unthinkable nowadays - which makes me remember this even more fondly.

Make sure you've got plenty of black people - even if the person's contribution was largely insignificant you still have to spend time on it.
