i don't understand the "sell out" concept

if a band wants to remain unpopular, then they should hide from people and not publish any music and not play concerts to avoid the possibility of being offered a deal from a record company

It's selling out if they compromise their musical style to appeal to a broader audience in hopes of making more cash.

Not selling out means making the music that they think sounds best without taking record sales into consideration.
