It is important.

It's not important for this. Just name some folk artists of the 1960's (besides Dylan)

Tim Buckley and Nick Drake are two of my absolute favorites. Also, Richard Thompson, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen... these artists are more properly folk-rock artists.

Some of the more popular "folk" proper artists: Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, Woodie Guthrie, Kingston Trio.

Edit: Simon & Garfunkel also!

None better than Joni Mitchell. "Blue" is one of the grestest albums of all time, and I hate folk music!

I always liked the Kingston Trio (Tom Dooley) (Charlie on the MTA) , but don't forget about the Smothers Brothers.

And I was just going to ask how someone could have mentioned Woody Guthrie without Arlo getting mentioned.

There's also Pete Seger and Don McLean.
