Name one MMOFPS that's NOT called PlanetSide: Defiance?

Trion Worlds - yeah, the people that put out Rift... they're coming out with a title named "Defiance".

Joystiq link

Not a lot of info, but it's yet another SyFy tie-in title... this one is supposed to have an actual TV series to go with it, where the game influences the series (I though Rift was supposed to do that, apparently the promo's last year that SyFy had actually alluded to THIS title).

There's little info on it, but TTH breaks down what we have:

- MMO Shooter. Is it a full FPS or is it a "sticky shooter" like Tabula Rasa was?

- Thousands of players per server. Does this mean thousands in a PlanetSide FFA sense or Thousands in a Huxley-instanced-failboat sense?

- Cross platform?! Supposedly the FIRST working title that players will interact across PC, XBox360 and PS3. Correction - it will come out on PC, PS3 and XBox, but NOT be cross platform (according to joystiq).

- PvE & PvP of course... that's a given.

- And ... a mechanic similar to Rift's rifts.

If it's a REAL mmofps, not a lobby-based fake shooter, then we have something to look forward to...

The people from EVE are supposedly coming up with an MMOFPS to integrate with EVE.

With that said, this is going on my Favorites to keep track of.

However, I still say we need a modern themed MMOFPS based off like the Battlefield series. Why do 99% of the few MMOFPS that we do have, have to be future themed? And the ones that aren't future theme are WW2.

Dust 514 has been announced to be a PS3 exclusive title - which means most people will have little interest in it.

That said, I just read (and added to OP) joystiq's article on it - it will NOT be cross-platform capable.

Dust 514, PS3 exclusive

As for this game, I'll keep an eye out. It has potential. Trion is a good developer, they did a very good job with Rift overall imo. Hope to hear more soon about this.

The big question about something like this is whether it will have nice mix of vehicle, air/space and infantry combat, and whether shooting other players will truly be like a FPS or more like a MMORPG because their hit points go up as they level up.

It's not really likely to be accurate but I thought I'd mention you can pre-order this on Amazon already and it shows a Dec 2012 release date...describes it as a third person shooter though...come on, nooooo....

It is hard to see how non-instanced shooters work. Depending on the mechanics somewhere between 6v6 and 12v12 is the sweet spot for shooters without vehicles and then you can step up it up if you are talking about a battlefield style game - but even then I don't think anyone plays 16v16 competitively.

I think as you scale up in players things like snipers and turrets (both shooter mainstays at this point) become overly effective for turtle-ing or in choke points. I think you would have to come up with some unique or very limited class and item choices when dealing with a large number of players.

Global Agenda is the best mmo-shooter (even shooter) out right now and they stuck with 10v10 for this very reason.

I never played Planetside but talking theoretically as you scale up in players the "defenders" of an objective have an increasing advantage due to the fact that during the initiation phase where the enemy is en route, or out in the open, and not really firing, their effectiveness does not scale with player amount as well as, say, the extra stationary guns or snipers that the defenders have. So having pseudo-indoors objectives or any funnels makes it difficult for attackers to breach with large amounts of players. On the other hand having completely open objectives with little cover isn't exactly enthralling either. It is kind of a clusterfuck.

The only counter to this that I can think of is if the game isn't as clan-based, but more of an individual / faction-centric game where progression and not competitive play is more the goal. Or clever mechanics to spread players out in a giant map into actual pockets of 12 or less where real team strategy can occur.

Away team missions in Star Trek are PVE FPS, though it's single-player and in easy mode. Still, it's FPS in a SF MMO....
