I guess that's just the way it is these days or in this era. But we can name actors and musicians on the spot.
Do you know who Vermeer is? Or maybe van Gogh? Both couldn't sell their paintings and died poor. It's very rare for painters to get recognition during their life. Nowadays people actually know more about current painters thanks to social media and world press than in the past.
Popular musicians and actors tend to be a lot more visible than painters anyway (and have always been), as you can see an actor act or a musician play, but painters often are locked away for weeks or even months while working on a piece, and then have to hope someone appreciates it.
Bob Ross was someone who showed people that painting something nice didn't have to take forever and thus became popular. But watching someone paint a painting in 20 minutes or watching someone take weeks to try and perfect every layer of paint is a bit different. Not many would have the patience for that second option, especially not if they don't know whether they'll even like the result
