At some point, someone told me about some military training school which is supposed to simulate behind-the-lines situations where they basically dump you off in the middle of the woods and then try to hunt you down and beat you for a few weeks. I was told they're allowed to break fingers/toes when/if they find you.

Does anyone have any more information about this / know what school that is?

SERE - Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape.

There are different levels for different requirements, but like most things in the military it is somewhat exaggerated as to what actually happens.

i highly doubt they break your bones...

ranger training involves long stays in the woods, learning to survive on bugs, stuff like that. i believe there may be a 'hunt you down' type training scenario involved, but no one is beating you...

if this is true, it would either be a) some really secretive unit beyond rangers, special forces, marine recon, et al, or b) an old story from when drill sergeants were allowed to smack the fuck out of soldiers in basic training (well, maybe not allowed, but it happened).

They won't break your bones, and as someone already mentioned it's SERE; only people that might actually end up behind enemy lines go to it (helicopter pilot friend of mine had to).

SERE is fairly manditory for anyone that will be either inserted behind enemy lines and/or aircrew that could be shot down.

It is rough, but it can save your life.

I didn't know SERE also included "general" survival--thought it was mostly for captivity, anti-interrogation techniques for elite and black ops type units.

Yeah, my brother was a CH-46 crew chief and had to do that stuff too. He said it wasn't too crazy. One thing he had to do was escape from a CH-46 fusalage submerged in water.

No. Ranger school is mostly about how to conduct patrols, organize units, and plan attacks. They don't feed you much, but you don't have to scrounge for food. You also do not sleep.
