I hate today's music... and after reading another thread, I freaked out again on how much I don't know a lot about classic [hard] rock music.

I already know the big hits from like Metallica, Megadeth, The Scorpions (I got Deadly Sting [2CD] and it's *awesome*), Guns 'n Roses, Iron Maiden, Ozzy... and I'm a huge AC/DC fan...

But I feel like I'm missing a lot of other great bands because I'm too young and I didn't really listen to that type of music until I was 16-17 years old... so I wasn't into that stuff when it was big.

I'd like to know the best hits from the big bands like Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, The Who... except for the stuff Ozzy recorded under his name, Smoke on the Water and The Wall, I've never listened to any of those bands...

Help me become rock litterate!

Kansas, Rush, Yes, Bob Seger, Black Crows, The Kinks, Head East, The Band, CSN&Y, Derek and the Dominos, The Eagles, Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Foreigner, Hart, Molly Hatchet, REO Speedwagon, Sammy Hagar, Styx, Ted Nugent, Tom Petty, Warren Zevon.

That's all who come to mind right now.

ZV

EDIT: Better to just buy albums (originals, not compilations) by the bands and listen to them. The best songs are rarely on the compilations.

I'm a huge Bowie and Brian Eno fan, but I doubt you'd care for Eno. I have to recommend Ziggy Stardust as a must listen album. Like it says on the back of the cover, "To be played at maximum volume" ;) Really, the guitar work of Mick Ronson is delicious.

After savoring that, check out Diamond Dogs. Damn, that album still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck! :Q

Kag, how do you feel about 90's music?

Like soundgarden, stone temple pilots, earlier Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Depends which band -- I didn't really listen to those bands you quoted at the time, but like Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun is a great song... and Audioslave was my favorite band last summer. My roommate listens to RHCP and I don't hate it.

Step 1: get bass. Some headphones and earbuds will do, but you NEED tight bass to properly listen to Led Zeppelin, Pink FLoyd, and EL&p at the least. The character and presence is totally different w/ and w/o decent bass.

Deep Purple:
Made in Japan (album). Great album. That's the live rip of SMoke on the Water you hear. The whole album is fantastic.
Hey Joe
Mistreated

Pink Floyd:
DSotM, of course.
IMO, The Final Cut is best, but you really can't go wrong.

Led Zeppelin:
The Ocean
Black Dog
Dancing Days
Dazed and Confused
Gallows Pole
Heartbreaker
Immigrant Song
In My Time of Dying
Kashmir
Moby Dick / Bonzo's Montreaux
No Quarter
Stairway, of course
The Battle of Evermore
Achilles last Stand
The Rain Song
The Wanton Song
Travelling Riverside Blues
When The Levee breaks
Your Time is Gonna Come
How Many More Times
Carouselambra
Black Mountain Side
Tea For One

Beatles:
their last five albums. Pick and choose; everyone I know has vastly different preferences, but likes the last five they made.

Queen:
A Night at the Opera (the ONLY bad song is God Save the Queen...you WILL bow down to The Prophet's Song!)
Jazz and A Day at the Races are great, too.

Aerosmith:
Toys in the Attic (no bad songs on that thing, IMO)

Warren Zevon:
I need to get some more. I have yet to hear anything by him I didn't like. RIP :(

Rainbow:
Rainbow (good)
Rainbow Rising (absolutely amazing...listen to Tarot Woman and Stargazer and you get hooked, and will forever love Dio)

Steppenwolf:
Jupiter's Child
The Pusher
Your Wall's Too High
It's Never Too Late
From Here to there Eventually
Everybody's Next One
The Ostrich
Desperation
Forty Days and Forty Nights (check out Muddy Waters while you're at it)
Monster - Suicide - America

Meatloaf:
Bat Out Of Hell (duh)
You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights
Two Out of Three Ain't Bad

Jethro Tull:
Thick as a Brick (album)
Aqualung
Cross-eyed Mary
Hymn 43
Locomotive Breath

Frank Zappa:
Apostrophe (album)(you just got to listen to sh!t about Nanook's favorite baby seal getting baten with a lead-filled snowshoe)

Grand Funk Railroad:
Inside Looking Out
Heartbreaker
On Time
Mean Mistreater

Emerson, Lake and Palmer:
Emerson, Lake and Palmer (album)(odd, but good)
Brain Salad Surgery (album)
You've heard it, you just might not know it.
"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We're so glad you could attend
come inside, come inside
There behind the glass stands a real blade of grass
move along, move along
Come inside, the show's about to start
Garunteed to blow your head apart!
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
Greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth
You gotta see show, it'd a dynamo!
You gotta see the show, it's rock & roll!"
-Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression part 2, from Brain Salad Surgery.
And it has cool HR Giger cover art to boot :)

Elton John:
Holy Moses
Levon
Burn Down the Mission
Daniel
Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)

...that's all I can think of right now.
