Name five fiction books that everyone should read

I'm taking my last English class ever this Fall semester (World Lit 1) and I'm curious about books that you enjoy. I've never been one for reading fiction when I wasn't forced to, but I'm interested in rounding myself out a little.

What five fiction books do you think that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime and why?

Fiction is worthless. Far too much in this world to learn about that isn't ficticious. I'll lick someone's wound if they can tell me what movie that's from.

Sounds like something I would say. 😉

I don't think anyone should read fiction as "work" outside of a class, you should read it for enjoyment. But a couple of good ones are

Homer - The Odyssey - it's had a huge influence on all fiction after it, as well as popular culture (for exanple the expression "between a rock and a hard place")

Harriet Beecher Stowe - Uncle Tom's Cabin (be careful not to get some PC-censored version) - to gain a better understanding of what slavery was really like

I've read 1984 and I started reading the Hobbit, but lost interest.

the aviator?

The Catcher in the Rye
1984
Fahrenheit 451
Atlas Shrugged
China Boy <-- teh best book evar. Gus Lee is awesome!

Lord of the Flies
1984
The Origin of Species
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Eyes of the Dragon

Edit: and if you're 12 or younger, Harry Potter 😉

Another Edit: Lord of the Rings

Yet another edit: Watership Down

1984
Catch-22
The Fountainhead/Atlas Shrugged
Fahrenheit 451

I can't really name anymore really. I've stopped reading most fiction. Unless the book offers a different outlook on life, it really isn't worth reading. You can get just as much entertainment out of a movie in 1/10 the time.

I read to educate myself.

Don't know the movie, but disagree with teh sentiment. Fiction often echoes what's going on in the world and is quite worthwhile to read.

 to all of those except Moby Dick, which I thought was incredibly dull.

The thread was not about the best books or the most exciting, but the ones everyone should read. Like it or not, Moby Dick is one of the most important novels in American history.
