A few more recently "failed" sci fi shows that come to mind

Flash-Forward - Only lasted one season but I quite liked it. I would have liked to see a second season but not to be.

V - Pretty average.

Alcatraz - A snooze fest. Sam Neil was miscast and the show itself was just too slow.

Alcatraz had so much potential too. It's probably the only scifi show of the past decade that I watched as it aired.

Oh come on, that's gone on for how many series too many? They've been churning out the same old crap for years!

---

Referring to the list of good SG1 episodes from earlier in this thread, 'The Torment of Tantalus' wasn't exactly prime sci-fi material IMO...
50 years of being alone, then 40 minutes of company and he's as right as rain, seemingly no toilet, and luckily there was 50 years' supply of perfectly sustaining food? If the building was meant to be an intergalactic meeting place, what are the chances that there would be any compatible food there at all? What about water? Has the old guy been prepared in any way for what to expect when he returns to Earth 50 years later?
I'll try the next one in the list.

I watched the 'scorched earth' episode this morning, which IMO was the equivalent of an unremarkable TNG episode - no serious flaws, but nothing to write home about either.

There was a whole planet outside the meeting place, presumably with water and food.
And whats so hard about taking a dump and wiping with leaves? Our ancestors did it.
And the guy was not exactly normal throughout the episode.

Watch the guy at the end of the episode, he seemed pretty normal to me. Hence I said '40 minutes'.

At the start of the episode, the colonel says "does anyone see a way in or out of this place?" Teulk (sp?) responds "there appears to be only two doors", as opposed to "there's a way out over there". The colonel's question very much suggests that he's looking for a confirmation for what he already suspects. Also, the outdoor shots show no sign of vegetation, only the sea and a rocky landscape.

Ever since Stargate SG-1 concluded I haven't been following any Sci-Fi shows. I've been re-watching the entire Stargate SG-1 series from the start and so far I'm in the middle of season 7. What new shows out there that compares to the quality of SG-1? I'm thinking I should forgo anything new and start on watching the entire series of the newer The Outer Limits.

Not a new show, but FARSCAPE FARSCAPE FARSCAPE X1000

Also Battlestar:galatica/ the 4400

I went back and checked. They did say there was two doors but Daniel only went thru one of them, which led to the 'library". Daniel asked Ernest if there was anyone else here and Ernest said no. No one went thru the other door. When Daniel was reading Ernests log it said Ernest had explored for miles and found no one. I assumed he meant outside.

Well I really liked The Torment of Tantalus. It's a really well written episode.

I'm still going through the whole series. I'm in season seven. Last nights episode was Heroes part 2. Remember it from when it first aired. Such a sad episode. Great acting in that one.

It was one of the best episodes from the first season which on the whole was not very good. The show took awhile to get going.

Artie did a good job in Heroes.

@ techs

regarding spoiler'd conversation - fair point. The character was remarkably well-groomed, considering :)

Bumping this thread.

Finished watching everything Stargate SG-1. All 214 episodes + the two movies. Started in December and finished last week. Even watched most of the DVD extras.

The next series on my list is the newer The Outer Limits. Season 1 was released on DVD in 2005, so I picked that one up pretty cheap. The rest of the seasons were released in 2010, so I have to pay a bit more for them. Ordered seasons 1 and 2. They should arrive soon.

I watched The Outer Limits when it was on tv. There were some good episodes for sure, but there were some that were very meh too.

Most of them are one-offs with completely contained stories and one-time characters, but there is at least one recurring story I can remember.

I love Stargate SG1, like Atlantis, but can never get in Universe. I also couldn't get in BSG either. I believe my major issue with Universe and BSG is there is too much sex, darkness and gritty in it. I kid you not. It is also a problem with a majority of the new show, too much sex and blood. It is not a sign of maturity. It is adolescent view on mature, every episodes much have sex and so much grit.

Yeah, all that gritty sex is killing Game of Thrones....:colbert:

I, for one, enjoyed the Stargates with its lack of sex. On the other hand, I enjoyed Battelstar Galactica wouldn't have been as good without the "adult themes"

Kids today, like it or not, have been exposed to the stuff I didn't find out until 16-18 by the time they are 12-14(thanks internet). You just don't get the teenage audience anymore without a far more realistic depiction of interpersonal relationships. And for teenagers that means sex, sex, sex(thanks hormones).

It sounds like you're like me. You're far more interested in the "heroic future", with stories based around the progression of humanity rather than the regression of it. Not to say that gritty is bad, but "all bad, all the time" is the drama equivalent of a snuff film, IMHO. Life comes with good things and bad things; good shows should be able to do both.

Yes, there really needs to be at least one show with the positive future. It seems post apocalyptic shows are all there are anymore.
Oh, and lets not forget the *pew* *pew* *pew*

Well, I like porn as much as the next guy but when I want a good scifi, I prefer one witout excessive sex scene. I like Game of throne too, but I see it as dark fantasy and it was medival ages. Think about it, can you made Game of throne the same experience without all the sex and tits? Yes. Will it AS popular at it is now? Probably not.

This is semi related, but it is a video concerning game but you can see the trend.

I also love show like Eureka and Warehouse 13, and they do not need sex to sell the serie.
