nagios authentication issues

The documentation for this project stinks :p

Ok, I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to work or not but: I setup Nagios and no matter what id I log into it with I get guest access. I can setup the guest account to be able to do everything, but that's annoying. Is it supposed to remember which user I login to it as? Why won't it do that for me? If I disable the guest account it tells me I am logged in as "?."

So obviously it can't figure this out, and since it logs almost nothing useful, I can't figure out how to fix it.

Back to google and the crappy documentation. Hope someone can help me with this one.

I've only used it as netsaint but then all it did was use normal Apache authentication, you just specify what users are allowed to do what and then setup a .htaccess file like normal.

Nagios does the same thing. I have the .htaccess setup, and working (as far as initial authentication goes). If I type the password or username in wrong it does kick me out. But, after logging in as a non-guest user (nagiosadmin, ddp, n0c, whatever) it still says guest at the top and limits what I can do based on being logged in as guest. If I don't activate the guest account, it won't let me do anything.

Since you are using it, I'll try netsaint next. I'm trying to evaluate a few for work, and nagios was always at the top of the list. But if I can't limit users on what they can do and see, it's useless.

Thanks for the reply Nothinman. ;)

I wouldn't go back to netsaint just yet, there has to be something simple you're missing.

I need to evaluate a few of them. The customer doesn't want just one choice ;)

I figured it is something simple, but I haven't figured it out yet. I followed teh directions for most of it, although I haven't bothered with all of the configuration information since I haven't gotten past the authentication yet.

I added the Apache configurations word for word from the documentation. I can't think of any other Apache configuration options that would affect this, but I haven't played with cgi before.

Back to google and the docs I guess... :p

Ok, got it. I feel dumb. I didn't read the docs well enough. The .htaccess file has to be in multiple places, not just the html directory (also in the cgi directory). Works great now. Thanks! :D

But nagios is the successor to netsaint, you'd be going back to older revisions of the same code.

As for choices, What's Up Gold is a similar product by IPSwitch, but it only runs on Windows. I also remember reading about Big Sister in one of my Linux magazines, it's an attempt at a free, Big Brother compatible app.

Yeah, I read that. I got it mixed up with one of the othe projects listed on the requirements page.

I've used that before, and I think it's horrible. I think Nagios is what I want to recommend, but I should play with a few of them first.

Downloading bb now, but I'll look for Big Sister. It sounds familiar.

Link Analyst is another one. It's decent, but not free.
