I know you guys make your money from the ads so don't get me wrong but....

1. I'm religiously opposed to gambling (Christian)
2. What does it have to do with a hardware forum?
3. I've noticed the ad keeps getting bigger and bigger (1st it was on the left on the bottom kinda obscure like, then it got taller, now it's on the top banner ad w/lots o' blinkin lights.

If you don't take the ad down it's fine, I understand how $$$ flows. I just felt it was my duty to let you know its irritating me.

edit: I actually did click on the newegg adds from time to time (tho they seem to have disappeared recently), and rarely click on the appro ads.

The moderators here have no control over what adverts are shown, or in taking them down.
:)

The moderators also don't necessarily actively monitor this forum. So it works out well.

Temp Solution:

Use Firefox, Install AdBlock+, right click the add and remove it... Never comes back and removes the space as well :)

I never even noticed the ads until I read this thread. I've learned to mentally block them out after all these years. :)

Without the ads this forum wouldn't exist.

Christians aren't supposed to gamble, it isn't a sin as far as I know, but it is highly frowned upon. (at least that's whats taught in every church I've ever been to...Baptist, Methodist, Church of Christ, Pentecost, and Roman Catholic.)

It's kinda like drinking, its not a big deal to drink alcohol, however it is frowned upon in most churches or at least not drinking in moderation. I liked to had a heart attack when I went to a Catholic wedding once (granted it was only one catholic church so I'm not generalizeing), nearly everone got plastered at the reception. You aren't even supposed to bring alcohol onto Baptist/Methodist Church grounds.

Oh well, if the mods can't do anything about it's a moot point either way.

Christ drank wine AFAIK.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I'm not going to tell other people how to live their lives. Those who frown upon others for basically everything that they do in life are sinners like the rest of us. They're even telling people not to play Doom3 because it's "evil".

I never would have thought of gambling till I saw that ad. So far I am down $17,525. If I don't make it back soon I don't know what I will do. Maybe Anand will reimburse me?

and I actually drink occasionally, in moderation. (and have been so wasted once so bad that I was near death from alcohol poisening) Everyones a sinner, I didn't expect/want this to get a theological discussion going.
and like most people I have also gambled on rare occasion (texas lotto). my point is just the ad really doesn't belong in a tech forum and it's kind of an irritating ad.

I agree, but the problem is that 90% of the posts on these boards are in Off Topic, which makes this more of a general chat room unfortunately. There are much, much worse ads on the internet as I'm sure you've seen. I'm thinking we should consider ourselves lucky it's only gambling. :)

I'm surprised it's 10 times the size of the AMD ad beside it. If you open up the main page it's purely tech companies. Maybe my 90% estimate was spot-on.

Christianity is a gamble. You're gambling a lot of fun right now on the Bible being right. ;) Heck, most churches have bingo and/or casino nights, etc. And I'm sure most churches have insurance. :p Moderation is definitely the key.

Anyhow, I didn't mean to start something. Is it possible to get seasick from moving banner ads?

But turning water into wine is approving the action. ;)

I agree with the facts it doesn't belong and it's irritating.

The bible doesnt say that you cannot drink.

It say.. be ye not drunk with wine, where in excess... or something close to that. Drinking = ok. Getting drunk = not ok.

And as far as gambling... hahaha!! Like the catholic church bingo night?

:)

Wasn't the Jewish wedding that Christ was attending in Cana(?) a 7 day affair of pretty much gorging on food and wine?

I think this is more of a cultural tradition more than anything that has serious roots in the bible, but hey you are free to live that way, thats cool :) Personally I don't gamble, but it has nothing to do with religion.

Bigger picture: I believe the idea is to avoid addictive / self-destructive behavior since it's likely to damage one's relationship with God as well as with others. That make any sense? :)

It really does surprise me to see Party Poker ads here. The times they are a-changin'...

Are you serious?? you really need to get a good book on Poker... btw does Poker come under gambling? I always figured that Poker was more on skill than luck vis a vis Casinos.

There is no skill involved in the right card that you need being dealt, therefore it is luck. Not that I'm against poker by any means, but if you just watch the poker pros on TV, they rely on luck and bluffing most of the time. The player that is getting all the right cards usually wins.

gambling is addictive. im surprised its being advertised here. i know there are other types of recovery folks on these boards and they all tend to blend together.
