n00b question on DVD Media... 4.5gb or 4.7gb?

Hey guys,

Basically do the DVD media round up the bits like HD manufactures do? Because in Nero I have 4489mb of storage instead of the advertised 4.7gb.

I just want to make sure here. 😀

Thanks!

It's true, the 4.7 is a big fat lie. Basically it's 4,7xx,xxx,xxx bytes. They call it 4.7GB. The actually usable space is closer to 4.38GB.

There's an Anandtech FAQ article on something that might be related to this. It was about how Gibibytes and gigabytes. I didn't understand how there would be a discrepancy since the HD manufacturers measure in gigabytes and so do our computers.

Thanks guys.

And to reply to your question, a megabyte is 1024kb's, but label it as 1000. So they basically round it up.
