n00b question about overclocking

Well, I have spent the last little while searching, but to no avail, even though I'm pretty sure this question will have been asked many times before. What I'm wondering is, how much higher overclock would you get with a higher clocked CPU?

I mean, if I took 2 A64s, say 3200 and a 3800 for arguments sake, should I expect the 3800 to clock higher (steppings aside for the moment), and if so, how much (roughly)?

I mean, just because the 3800 is 400MHz higher at stock, I somehow doubt it would end up being 400MHz faster after overclocking.

So, can anyone shed some light on this, point me to an article/ thread? Heck, even suggest some search terms and I will go and search again.

nm I mis understood Q.. Be back in a couple.

Look up "CPU speed bining".. all the CPUs in same class are the same but the higher clocked and sold ones are generally thought to have more tolerace for higher clocks because they a cherry picked more.. But there is no rule that says a 3200 can't make 3Ghz either and you may get a 3800 which can't get past 2.6Ghz... YMMV

it's best to buy cheap chips when OCing since they have so much more room off base clock and are so much more cheaper..

FX's are really cherry picked since most can hit 3.2 air.. but really that only a 400Mhz OC...pretty lame if you ask me.. I'd much rather buy a 3200 for 1/6th the price and make into a 3Ghz chip...

Cheers for that. So basically, ignoring the luck factor, a higher clocked chip may well end up a wee bit faster.

And so, at the end of the day, if you are overclocking for the performance more than the overclock itself, you may as well get the fastet chip you can reasonably afford, and overclock that, rather than save $150, buy a cheaper chip, and hope it overclocks to the same extent. As long as you arent sacrificing other parts for that extra CPU speed.

So I think I'll order an Opty 148, instead of the 146.
