Ok, I just got this WD 1000JB SE drive this morning and I'm ready to put Win2k on it. But I need to make three partitions.

10gb for OS
20gb for backup
70gb for program files

I know the CD is bootable and can create partitions, but from previous experience it would create a partition and then proceed to install Win2k on it sometimes without asking me. Then I'd have to reformat all over. So do I need to make a startup disk and make 3x FAT32 partitions, then format one using the CD to NTFS, install the OS, then format the other two partitions to NTFS?

But how do I make a startup disk in Win2k?

Use disk administrator once you've installed Win2k on your 10gb partition to create and format the other partitions.

Edit: It's under the Computer Management in administration tools.

when you boot from the CD it will give you the option to create partitions then choose one to install the OS to.

You can either create all three there at install OR just create your primary 10GB partition, then create the rest later from within windows.

I'd still recommend using the windows UI so you can create an extended partition. Otherwise, if you decide to go back to win98, it may be inexcessible.

I'm not going back to Win98 or anything like that. I'm only going to have Win2k on this machine. Eventually I'll get a new mobo and that means new chipset so I'll probably have to back up and reformat anyway. Had to when I went from KT133 to nForce. Now I'm on AMD760, going to KT333 soon.

I just have no idea where that comment came from. Anyway, hope that Win2k partition thing works w/o the same problems I had earlier.

I had a problem when I upgraded from 2000 pro to XP pro and wanted to format a 100 GD HDD

I could do it only by loading up the 2000 software in a fresh install and then it asks you if you want to format ..... XP never gotme there ..

maybe this will help

I wanted a NTFS files system
