N00b intel vs. amd question

Can someone just explain the different ghz ratings on intel P4 chips and A64 chips? On my soon-to-be-updated computer I'm running a P4 3.06, but the AMDs out now are 2.0-2.7+ghz. I know my P4 3.06 is not actually more powerful than a current AMD 2.0, so whats the deal? Is the FSBxmultiplier formula different or something?

thanks

The athlon 64 3000 is roughly equally to a 3.0c or e series p4. The amd is more efficient, with a shorter pipeline, and an on die memory controller. I prefer the amd simply because it runs cooler. I'm not a fanboy. I would use either Intel or amd, but amd is clearly better for gaming.

I choose whichever cpu is better, and currently, AMD is in the lead with their more efficient design. In gaming, a regular 3200+ is roughly the same speed as intel's extreme editions. You should difintely get the AMD over the intel chips

Oh I'm quite aware that AMD is the winner, I'm just curious about speed comparissons. So the P4s have a higher clock rating, but are more inefficient, and thus an AMD 2.0 outperforms an Intel 3.0 - right?

thats about the just of it. Don't build a complex or anything though, because that will all be changing (the clock speed comparisions) when intel releases their 4 new cores, Yonah, Merom, Conroe, and...crap what was the other one...the server one....anyway, Yonah won't be around too long it looks like, being replaced with merom by i think Q3. (Yonah and Merom are mobile chips.) Conroe will be the desktop chip. As far as i know, we don't know anything about its speed numbers yet.

Clock speeds dont mean much no more when comparing different cpu designs. Simply the amd cpus do more per clock cycle which means they dont need to be clocked as high to perform the same.

Example u need to move 2 bags, u can move one at a time, each takes u one second, for a total of 2 seconds, or u can move 2 bags at the same time, this takes u two seconds.
Respectively the clock speed in that example is 2hz vs 1hz, but u will notice that the work done is equal. This is as simple as i can get ofcourse its much more complex when it comes to cpus.
