So,

I set up to my client a new server, and he tells me to get rid of the old ones... So I have at home now 4 Digital Prioris 6000 servers.
Now these look impressive but... they are dual PPro 200Mhz machines, 512Mb EDORAM, 3x 4,5Gb UW SCSI HDDs, CD, FDD...
Are they good for anything, or should I just scrab them? Seti@Home? What?

Suggestions welcome!

Depending on the processor cache size, you could get about 2 WUs a day per box with SETI, and thats if you overclock it.

If you get rid of them..pmsg me, I'm a PPro junkie. I'm starting to accumulate bits and pieces here and there for crunchers. :D

The SoB client only uses 8-11 MB of memory and with all 4 systems you can get decent production. we are currently in 3rd but we do have a real chance to take second with a little more help

Which project is it that gets a big boost with 256mb ram? Distributed Folding?

In any case, don't scrap them. I'm running SETI on a Pentium MMX 200, and I'm planning to add another Pentium 200 and maybe a Pentium 133.

yes, DF production can be doubled on system with adequate RAM

i don't see the OS listed in the initial post, but 512MB is more than enough to use the "use extra RAM" switch in DF

You can run projects on them!!! I cannot get myself to throw away my old Pentium 133, I just keep running projects on it, it's slow but it still helps :)

I have ran SETI and SoB on slower computers and both work fine, but slow ;)

If they have large cache they will be good at seti.

Are they single processor motherboards?

They are dual PPros as stated above... all procs have 256Kb cache.

Well, that leads me to my another question... these babies have no OS! I will also take suggestions on that. Obviously Linux of some sort, it's been awhile since I've used/installed Linux so give me your favorites! Red Hat? FreeBSD? Mandrake?

I have OpenLinux (IBM) discs and "licenses", that came with a bunch of laptops. Is that any good?

My son MrFluffy is running a SETIQ and low usage Webserver using a Compaq Proliant 800, dual PPRO 180@200mhz. :)

I have one just like it downtairs, but it's not running because he "stole" ;) all the EDO memory for his machine. :Q ;) :D

I like the PPros, they worked like champs for a long long time. I wish I had several of the 512K cache ones. :)

Ah, sorry I didn't see the 'dual' part.

256k cache isn't great. Running 2 instances of seti on each box you should be able to get around 7 or 8 WU's per day from all four running 24/7.

Maybe you could sell them all off and build one Athlon rig that would do the same number of WU's per day?

My Athlon XP2400 does 8 WU's per day.

Heh,

Yeah I guess my dual MP1800+/1Gb would have all those for breakfast?

Yes, your dual MP1800 would probably produce as many WUs as all of these combined, if not more. Oh, and btw, if you're going to sell them, I might be interested in one (it's a matter of convincing the parents that I need yet another computer - I have two already and they think that's too many). :p
