N00b Driver Qusestion

AMDZen

Lifer
OK so I have had nothing but AMD computers for almost as long as I can remember. Probably at least 10 years through a K6-II and K6-III, Athlon and on to my current setups which have an Opteron 170 and an Opteron 146. The only exception was a Pentium 3 system I through together as a secondary computer for a bit.

The fact is I can't even remember the last time I had a motherboard that wasn't nVidia since the original nForce.

I just bought an e8400 and IP35 Pro yesterday for my first Intel Build since forever so I'm pretty much a n00b again in regards to Intel Chipsets.

So any way, my question is on Intel Drivers and anything I may need to learn about them. For instance there was the occasional system issue with installing the Storage drivers on Nforce4 systems, although I only had a problem with them on one driver install it is recommended by most everyone that if your having any issue you can start by using just the Windows drivers.

Is there anything like this I need to know? Also, I never install drivers from the CD that ships with the Motherboard so I assume I just need to go find P35 drivers on Intel's website. Anything else you think I need to know please don't hesitate to inform me.

I would look to the M/B (abit) web site for current drivers. Other than wanting the most current drivers IMO I don't think there is anything wrong with just using the CD that comes with the M/B.

I tend to hit up the generic drivers straight from Intel so I have the most current version. It depends on how attentive your motherboard manufacturer is. You can snag the latest ones for the 3-series chipset from Intel's Download Centre and you should be good to go. If you want to run the SATA controller in AHCI/RAID mode you will need the Intel Matrix Storage drivers as well (also available from Intel, or your motherboard manufacturer). For XP, you will need to put them on floppy and load them during setup (press F6 when prompted during the initial stage of setup). If you're installing Vista, grab the appropriate drivers and put them on a flash drive then use the "Load Drivers" button when selecting where to install Vista.

Other then that, there shouldn't be (m)any surprises. I built the machine in my sig last month and the Vista x64 setup was absolutely flawless. The only catch I ran into post-install was the SoundMAX audio drivers. The drivers work fine, but I found the full install package a little undesirable with all the SoundMAX utilities. Instead, I just extracted the driver package and installed the HD audio device from the INF (skips all the add-in utilities). I do all the audio config via the Vista control panel.

Yea it looks like Abit is kind of bad about upkeeping the drivers per the dates on their site for the IP35 Pro versus the Intel site. Thanks guys. nForce is a lot easier it seems, all the drivers in one place - with Intel I guess I have to go get everything seperate
