My understanding is that he is just a customer, what's the big deal? Politicians get in trouble for having affairs without losing their positions (recently Los Angeles mayor did, and of course there's Bill). Is it really worse when the guy had to pay a prostitute rather than just taking a woman out on a date?

Where to begin.

Crossing state lines to committ a crime.
Breaking various financial laws.(this is what got him busted).

Its more than just solicitation/prostitution.

Why are his three daughters wearing "hooker"(inset other name here for them) boots? Aren't they a bit young?

Well I don't know what else he's done, hiring a prostitute alone wouldn't seem like it would be enough on its own based on past events. But I imagine other criminal activity should boot him out of office.

Not to mention his televised bragadoccio when taking down prostitution rings while attorney general. If you're going to brag about smiting the beast don't get caught feeding it.

I figured sooner or later they would nail Spitzer's ass to a cross. He made way too many enemies and was way too self righteous.

I think the truly important question, which has yet to be brought up here, is........

Did the prostitute in question swallow........or Spitz???

The prostitute claims he wanted to do something unsafe, but she refused. So I believe that statement answers the burning question we all wanted to ask all along.

The federal investigation of a New York prostitution ring was triggered by Gov. Eliot Spitzer's suspicious money transfers, initially leading agents to believe Spitzer was hiding bribes, according to federal officials.

It was only months later that the IRS and the FBI determined that Spitzer wasn't hiding bribes but payments to a company called QAT, what prosecutors say is a prostitution operation operating under the name of the Emperors Club. [...]

Spitzer, who made his name by bringing high-profile cases against many of New York's financial giants, is likely to be prosecuted under a relatively obscure statute called "structuring," according to a Justice Department official.

Structuring involves creating a series of financial movements designed to obscure the true purpose of the payments.

Ok... now it all makes sense.

When I heard the announcement last week about the Feds breaking up a prostitution ring, I wondered why they were making such a big deal about it-- after all, in a four year time span they only made a million dollars. It didn't make any sense that the Feds would focus their attention on such a small operation.

Now knowing that they only uncovered the prostitution ring in the process of investigating Spitzer for shady financial moves-- I feel a bit more comfortable knowing the Feds aren't spending all of their time acting as the sex police.

I don't see how he can avoid resignation.

if it were just an affair, that'd be one thing, but this is involving flagrantly violating state and federal laws.

I don't think Spitzer feels that way right now.

That's for sure. His whole life will be messed up because of a few rolls in the hay. I'm wondering which will come first, his resignation, or his wife filing for divorce?

I was thinking.... isn't it amazing though, the power of poontang. that it can make someone take such a risk. that it can bring down even the most powerful and self righteous in our society.
