TOKYO (Reuters) - North Korea appeared to have conducted another nuclear test, Japanese broadcaster NHK said on Wednesday, a day after China joined other powers calling for a tough response to the communist state's announcement of a first.

Japanese government sources had information that there was a tremor in North Korea and they were checking on the possibility of a nuclear test, NHK said.

A South Korean Geoscience official said there were no immediate signs of seismic activity across the border.

Defying warnings from its neighbors, the United States and the U.N. Security Council, North Korea announced on Monday that it had conducted its first-ever nuclear test.

Pyongyang said a U.S. "threat of nuclear war and sanctions" had forced its hand.

China and Russia, which both border North Korea, met other veto-holding members of the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to discuss a range of sanctions proposed by the United States and Japan to pressure Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program.

"I think that there has to be some punitive actions," said Beijing's U.N. Ambassador, Wang Guangya. "We need to have a firm, constructive, appropriate but prudent response to North Korea's nuclear threat."

In Moscow, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov called the reported test a "colossal blow" to the nonproliferation regime but, like China, insisted an eventual U.N. resolution should not involve the use of force.
