Why couldn't the kid just tell the cops to call his foster parents for confirmation? Or even better, call them up and tell them to come home and confirm in person.

Meanwhile, even though it sucks, I still maintain people need to be aware of what the police can and will do to you, despite it's legality. Is it worth getting pepper sprayed/beaten/shot just because "F THE POLICE!!!" ???

The best thing you can do is be overly cooperative and proper with them. That way, when they violate your Rights, you have a nice lawsuit on your hands, where you show your cooperation and willingness to give the police what they want, and then the police being racist asshats who have no regard for the law. It's a sure win.

But instead, the record would now show the kid being confrontational and rude to police. Even if they are in the wrong, more people might side with the police force on this one simply due to the reaction by the kid.

Shame on both ends I say.

Who is to say he wasn't going to right up until officer tiny dick decided to show that little black kid that he's in charge?

That kid was going to get pepper sprayed or tased no matter what he said, and in fact is likely lucky to be alive.

Yes, when a policeman tells you something like "put your hands on the door" and you refuse, that's what tends to happen to you. I guess for some people being able to defy a cop in the name of "not being disrespected" is valued over not being pepper sprayed or tased.

Evil will always prosper where good men do nothing. Do you dream a lot about your hands up on the door with your pants down to your ankles?

Rhetorical nonsense.

I'm not saying you don't file a complaint or lawsuit, but you do that after the fact. In the heat of the moment you are completely at a cop's mercy whether you like it or not, act accordingly or your odds of getting pointlessly fucked up skyrocket. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. Reality doesn't care about your principles, in fact it will often punish you for them.

How about no? Maybe police can actually try to deescalate things for a change instead of instantly assaulting someone.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it's reality. Standing up to a cop will get you fucked up if you pick the wrong one, and you will have accomplished precisely nothing by doing so.

Don't you see that as a huge problem? Standing up for yourself when you are in the right will get you fucked up. Yeah, that's a huge problem.

No. They had the word of a neighbor who apparently didn't actually know who lived next door. And even if you accept that as probable cause to question the person inside, following the answer of "I live here," the acceptable response is not "no pictures of you, pepper spray." What's to stop me calling the cops on you saying I saw you break in to your own home? Yeah, you could show ID, but why should you? This is America; "papers please," is kind of anathema to what we stand for.

Neighbor automatically assumed black person in this part of town = criminal. It's another Trayvon.

Like I've always said, you don't fuck with the cops. Right or wrong, you will get burned by doing so. If they tell you to put your hands on the door, you put your hands on the fucking door.

I've done absolutely nothing to warrant a SWAT team raid, but if they busted down my door just now and told me to put my hands up, I'm not going to talk back. At least not until they've left and I've gotten ahold of a lawyer.

The black man stopped by cop at gas station was told to show id immediately went to his car to get id and was shot.

Comply and get shot. Don't comply and get attacked.

Maybe the only solution was uttered by Chris Rock. If you are black and driving, travel with a white friend.

Amadou Diallo was told by police to show identification, he reached to get his wallet - where everyone I know keeps their ID. In the place everyone I know keeps their wallet and was shot forty one times. He didn't bitch or raise his voice, he was being fully complying. That worked out well for him huh?

If cops barge into my house unannounced, sorry but I'm not going to be compliant simply because they tell me to be. Amadou was shot 41 times for being compliant, which tells me that doesn't help much at all. I'm not black though, so likely nothing would happen to me if I was defiant.

So lets look at the flow chart of what people are saying.

If a cop comes up to you:

-you must comply with whatever the cop says, regardless of legality. If you don't, it is your fault that you get shot, tasked, or beaten by the cop.

If you do comply, you must follow all command, but not too fast (defined by the cops mind, so you have no way of knowing what fast is), or you will get shot, tased, or beaten, and it is your fault.

If you go too slow, you will get shot, tasked, and beaten for not following commands fast enough.

Man, that is complicated. Basically, the cops can do whatever, and its still your fault. Must be great to be a cop.

He was told to stop as he ran from police and to show his hands. He did neither. He was not told to show his identification. Was it a tragic shooting nonetheless? Yes.

And one where the officers involved were acquitted by a mixed race jury. Again, keep up the good work guys who are anti-cop - maybe with your encouragement yet more people will get killed or tased by refusing to cooperate with lawful police instructions. Whatever it takes to get to see some folks "stick to the man" though, eh?

Yeah cause its all about "sticking it to the man"....how simplistic!

You must assert your Rights in order to enjoy them. Respect is not granted because you wear a god damned badge, its how you treat people. Simpletons such as yourself can only see the surface of what is really happening while ignoring the deep impacts on society as a whole. Which makes you part of the problem not part of the solution.
