Sunday the 19th makes 3 months since the breakup of Flagship Studios marked the end of the Mythos closed beta. It's my understanding that the IP now belongs to Korea's Hanbitsoft, so it doesn't appear to leave much to hope for the future of the game as it was intended.

The staff of Flagship Seattle, as some of you have heard, have moved on to create Runic Games http://www.runicgames.com/ It is encouraging to note that they declare their intention to carry on in the "Action-RPG MMO" genre, as I believe they have the talent to potentially create a good game in the future.

As for Mythos, I thought it was a pretty decent game, certainly above average for free games, and was a nice sociable diversion for a couple of hours here and there. As I am somewhat "in between" games for the next couple of weeks, I found myself thinking of it.

Anyway, I know quite of few of us here were in that beta, so here's a nod to Runic Games, with best wishes for their future productions.

I really enjoyed what I played...it was fun to just go into some instances and play for an hour or two every once in awhile.

Yes, definitely.

I look forward to what Runic Games comes up with. As you said, I expect it to be another action RPG with some to alot of MMO features. Man they were really on to something, even the last month or two of Mythos beta had the new world (crazy what they accomplished in short time and a small team). And mistakes that Flagship made as a new developer will probably not be repeated by them!

I'm kind of curious to see what Hanbitsoft will do with Mythos. It'd be dumb to abandon it, but for me there is no way they can do anything with it that would come close to what the FSS Seattle team was doing.

It was nice but I don't miss it, it was becoming far too much like a MMO for my personal taste.

I feel that you are right in that it wouldn't be abandoned, but I'm more skeptical about the marketing model that they might use. The one outlined by Taylor and his team seemed to reflect a genuine respect to all players, and even though subsidy players would enjoy a potential leg up on certain premium items, the free players also were going to be able to participate in that "economy," even if they might have to work harder for some things.

They also clearly respected the contribution of free players towards making the community more active and fun for the whole game population, which also seems like good business sense to me.

But aside from the obvious value of the IP, for all we know Hanbitsoft may be hindered in some other way from publishing (or supporting) the game. Time will tell, eh?
