Growing up my Grandfather always told me to never blow an airgun (powered by a compressor without a drier on it) on my skin.. He said the rust and whatnot in the nozzle/tank can blow out and into your skin, possible giving you tetanus.

Opinions? I know the nozzle I used to use was literally rusting apart.. It could definetely blow chunks of rust into you.. also the water I drain off frequently is full of rust.

Also, the episode where they test top speed... I personally think they should've used a bike.. They could've gone much faster than the Lambo... and more accurately, I'm curious if a bike with taped up headlights (track bike-esque) could've beat the radar.

Edit:

and I'll take the opportunity to show off the bike.. and girlfriend..

her website is www.libertyfetish.com .. Lots of political/motorcycle/gun t-shirts and whatnot.

remember most of that equipment they use is brand new. I'd doubt theres a spec of rust on theirs.

I'm not necessarily criticizing what she did - it also probably is filtered and dried... more commenting on what people see and imitate - and asking if it's a valid thing to be cautious about..

I didn't see that Mythbuster's episode. But I think I can still comment. The tetanus/rust link is mostly a myth.

Tetanus is a bacterial infection. The bacteria thrive in moist organic environments (wet soil for example). Rust forms quite easilly in moist organic environments. Thus, if a metal on the ground rusted on the ground, it is probably an ideal situation for tetanus to grow. But the rust had nothing at all really to do with the tetanus. At most, the rust was a good location for the tetanus bacteria to attach to on the soil and then to be transmitted into your body. But a cut from a non-rusty object could just as well give you tetanus.

Air compressors are moist. But there isn't much organic material for bacteria to grow on. The chance of a tenanus colony growing inside your air compressor is quite small. I wouldn't worry about it.

That said, no pool of water is ever bacteria free (no matter how pure you try to make it). There is a tiny, tiny chance of there being bacteria in there. Still, unless you have a cut in your mouth, your saliva/stomach acid should kill it off.

When did you get the 675?! Oh man, I miss riding so much...

How do the stompgrips treat the gf's inner thigh? :p

I was always told not to spray air directly on your skin anywhere because it could cause a bubble to enter your bloodstream and kill you.. Not sure if its true or not, but looking back it was probably just a way for my dad to get me to quit f*cking with his Air Compressor.

My customer last week had me move her photos from one pc to another while she ws there with me. I saw a thumnail of what looked like Carrie. Turns out it was. My customer is good friends with her and it was pics of her, Carrie, and my customers baby on the beach at New Years. Beautiful photographs.

There were also some of Carrie and her boyfriend on his motorcycle in the same file.

And no, I have no way to prove it as I'd never post pics like that which aren't mine.

I hate the stompgrips beacause they're fuggin ugly, but they really do work well. It makes the bike a lot more comfortable to ride. I put about 17k on an 05 zx6r in a year, and the 675 is much less comfy. After the triumph gel seat, helibars, and stomp grips it's much better though.

#1: Doubtful. Unless there were sharp flecks of rust carefully poised in the front of the nozzle, and you stuck it right next to your skin and blew...which, of course, no one does.

As for the bike, I ride myself, and while they're great for acceleration, the car's a much better platform for top speed, and cornering. It's just more stable. Yeah, smaller radar profile though...I didn't see that ep, so I don't know exactly what the myth was.

Ultimate and final top speed, yes... But with the limited stretch of track they had I bet a hayabusa or zx14 could've done better - I fully understand the power to overcome wind resistance aspect, but we aren't talking about a 1 mile stretch of highway.. IIRC they only could get up 120 or so, and I think a bike could've gotten there quicker..

Edit:

An enzo has a 1/4 time around 11 sec's with a speed of about 135mph. A zx14r can do it in low 9's at 145-150mph..

I have heard that too. But, I think you usually need a special nozzle to get the velocity high enough to cause damage. Just putting a hose at normal air compressor pressures onto your skin likely won't do it.

OK, I didn't actually see the episode. If the car could only get up to 120, then the Hayabusa certainly would have been faster.

Especially not with one of those "OSHA approved" nozzles...MAN do those things blow. That is, they don't...a flea sneezing probably creates more of a breeze.

Okay, I found it on youtube.. He got barely over 120.. IIRC the track teacher went a little faster, but it wasn't much..

I read about a top gear episode where they DID beat a radar gun.. trying to find it now.. it's somewhere in episode 1 season 1 on youtube.

Edit:

okay..

apparently they tested with three cars - a civic type-r @ 129mph and cl55 @ 148mph that weren't fast enough, but a TVR was fast enough at over 170mph..

If you got some money to burn, you might like the techspec grips better.

Most accidents occuring with compressed air horseplay involve high pressure areas around a (bodily) orifice. :Q

In other words, as much as you want to, try not to goose your friend with the air dust gun. He or she may suffer serious colon injury!

That said it's kind of fun to get a few tunes out of your hands with nozzle gripped tightly in hand.

From what I've read those things tear up your leathers..

I've also tried this stuff:

http://www.aerostich.com/catal...aintguard-p-16210.html

Which works pretty well depending on the shape of your tank.. it doesn't like to stick to compound curves but is practically clear. I put it on my tailsection to help protect it from the triumph saddlebags and it works great.

How could an air bubble enter your bloodstream like that? You'd have to have a cut or something with a sliced open vein.

Heh would you mess with the air compressor if he said 'don't play with the compressor!' or if he said it could hurt you? I'm way less likely to play with stuff if someone says it may hurt me rather than someone saying 'dont touch it'.

Same reason a bullet can enter your skin, it's moving fast and with a lot of force.
