Myth TV

Thinking about building a media PC and running Myth TV. Anyone here running it, if so, what hardware are you using?

Everything works wonderfully. I can play 720p/1080i no problem, but 1080p is a no-go. I wish coreavc would release a linux version. The snes and genesis emulators are tons of fun too

i just built a mythtv box out of an old dell. i'll be setting it up tonight to see if it records ok.

ps - the install with knoppmyth is very easy. it boots off cd and you just select "auto-install".

Using Slackware 11 and MythTV 0.20.
I really like it. I set up SSH tunneling to access the web interface at work so I never have to worry about forgetting to record something.

my roommate built a mythTV box about a year ago, it works great.

Hardware wise he's got a P4 (unknown speed) and probably 512mb RAM, two 250 gb discs in a 500gb raid array.

We had a 6800 in it until that card died, now it's I think an old Mx440.

I don't know the make of the tuner, though it you want it I could ask him.

It's a great system, movies, TV shows, SNES games, N64 games (until the 6800 died, the 440 can't handle them).

Just don't use an Ati card, they really don't have much in the way of drivers for linux systems, and what they do have doesn't work all that well. We tried a 9800 after the 6800 gave up the ghost and it got us nothing but headaches.

I had one for about 2 years. I loved it. Also built it on a dell box with a nvidia card I had laying around. Leadtek XP2000 tv tuner and basic cable. It rocked.


The box got messed up from a lightning strike and I have yet to replace it.


I miss commercial skipping sooo bad.

That is only a playback method. It is in no way a DVR.

I use XP MCE. MythTV supports QAM though right? I may build a HTPC someday and put linux + mythtv on it. But until then I just use my main rig to record all of my tv shows since it's all i've got.

:heart: MythTV, though I had trouble setting up S-video out with the latest Ubuntu (not MythTV's problem).

It's both a backend and frontend for my TV, and I have it networked so I can watch TV and recorded shows from my primary comp.

I installed it but wasn't all that impressed comparing it to Windows MCE, which was a lot less work to install.

Not a chance. Look up at my hardware. Using Xine (and not MythTV which appears to not drop frames efficiently), I can play HD with some dropped frames. I am upgrading my video card so that I can use newer nvidia drivers which will hopefully allow me to watch non-jumpy HD in Xine and in MythTV.

Google XvMC and MythTV. There is a page on their Wiki that lists some configs people got HD on.

Once my wife and I purchase a 1080p 46" LCD TV then I'll be loading my main gaming rig as a MythTV box that can dual boot into Windows for gaming.

I gave it a try, but I must be doing something wrong because the live TV doesn't look very good.
Specs:
Athlon 1800+
512mb ram
200gb HDD
pvr-150
tnt2 ultra video card (hooked up to TV via VGA cable)

Any advice?

The K6 absolutely not. The P3-1gig *might*, but you'd need a heck of a video card to get most of the processing on it, and even then I doubt it.
My Dad can play 1080i videos on his P3-800 just barely. they are a little jumpy, but of course that is 100% CPU load. He has nothing left over if he wants to capture a show while watching another.

I am running BeyondTV on an AMD Sempron ~1.7 gHz. I have a PNY 7600 GS (AGP), and if I playback 1080i video at 1920x1080, it isn't perfectly smooth. Fortunately my TV supports 1680xsomething and I can play back at that resolution smoothly. I can't even tell a difference between those two resolutions on my TV since I have a CRT HDTV.
