Mystery problem after connecting Dell LCD monitor with its DVI cable

This is on a customer's PC using Win98SE. When he got the PC he hooked up a Dell SE198WFP (19") LCD monitor using the analog 15-pin connector, Windows saw the monitor and asked for drivers, and he used the Dell CD for the drivers. Everything was PERFECT for a couple of days.

Then he decided to hook up the DVI cable. (Video card is an nVidia FX5200 with both type connectors). When the started the PC up again, all he eventually got was a blank black screen with the mouse cursor! He hooked the analog connector back up, and he got the same thing!!!

He can get info safe mode ok. So in the Device Manager, it showed THREE monitors! One was the correct Dell SE198WFP, and the other two were "Plug and Play monitor". So I told him to remove all three and reboot, and he's on the analog connector at this time. When it restarts it shows the 'found new hardware wizard' as it did the first time. If he installs the drivers from the Dell CD, when he right clicks the Desktop to try and change settings he gets a BSOD. If he tells it to search the HD for the drivers, when it restarts it's in 640x480, and when he goes back to the display properties and sets it to something like 800x600 or higher, when the PC restarts it says "Entering power saving mode" and that's it!

First, I don't know why it's restarting when only changing resolutions, because the box to apply new settings without restarting is checked. Second, it was working perfectly before using the analog cable, so why not now?

I searched all over the Dell forums for the past few hours about this and found a lot of info he can try, one was about a serious bug issue in Dell monitors. http://forums.us.dell.com/supp...nitor&message.id=32302 . Note the most common video card reported is his FX5200! But again that does not explain why it will no longer work using the 15-pin analog connector, where it previously worked perfectly. I did email him the patch program, but I'm not totally confident that will fix the problem, (and he won't be able to get it until Monday).

(Another very strange thing, is now, when he goes to the startup tab in MSCONFIG, NOTHING is checked! Some how, everything got UNchecked, that includes the MUST HAVE System Tray, Scan Registry, and Explorer!! But if he does a cont-alt-del, Explorer and System Tray is running! The clock is still in the System Tray, but the other icons have vanished from it! Obviously not there now because they are no longer checked in Start Up tab.......but how did they get unchecked??? How can Explorer and System Tray be running when they are not checked in the Start Up tab????)

So as it stands now, it only works in safe mode, or in a regular boot ONLY in 640 x 480.

Has anyone here ever seen this happen, and if so, what did you do to fix it? I'm hoping someone is familiar with this, otherwise he'll have to try all those things I found, or he'll be forced to speak with a "non-English-speaking son of first cousins, 'Veejay' in India", which could take hours just to establish a comprehensible dialog. ROTFLMAO.

Somewhat common problem with nVidia drivers and DVI cables. I've had the problem with two different cards, various driver versions, XP and Vista.

The fix that works for me, unplugging both DVI and power cable from monitor for 30 sec and plugging back in. If it ever happens again, repeat..

Hello, from what I've found out about it so far, no one has mentioned the OS. It's been the video card, or the bad Dell monitor bug I noted at that Dell support forum link. BTW, there are hundreds of posts on this at their forums. But reinstalling is an option he can try. He can't use XP because he has special proprietary software for his business that only works on '98.

Yeah I saw some people mention that, thanks. Do you do that with the PC on, or off? But I don't understand how that affects the DB-15 analog cable connection, it won't work either.

Okay, kind of sucks that some buisness software can not be updated with the times.
