Pentium II/Celeron, LX chipset. 1 AGP, 4 PCI, 2 ISA (I shared.) Onboard ATI-rage AGP video with 2MB RAM. Came out of an HP Pavilion 8250, I'd like to flash a normal BIOS to it and throw in a Voodoo3 and a Celeron 2 and run it as a Linux server . . .

The lettering looks like something Asus would put out, but I couldn't find anything on Asus' website about the board. Thanks for the help!

it most likly is an asus board. the hp pavillion 8140 has an asus branded socket7 board. i think they are custom built for hp. the bios is very basic and hp offers very little support.

Yeah, I found a couple of mentions of it on Asus' site, but no BIOS support.

There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to run a 66Mhz bus Celeron in this board, right? The multiplier is set by the CPU - guess I'm just stuck with the stupid HP BIOS screen.

You might be able to put in a Celeron 1, but I highly doubt that you could put in a Celeron 2. There is no voltage support for Coppermine processors (certainly not on an LX board), and the differences between C1s and C2s are significant enough for older BIOSes without updates to choke completely and not boot up.

ASUS insists that you cannot flash their OEM boards with Retail ASUS BIOSes....I've never had a chance to try. The configuration of that board is closest to the P2L97A.

What I do find odd is that it has onboard video and an AGP slot.....that was not something that ASUS did very often, if ever.

Andy,

HUH! That looks just like the board I've got, except that there are only two memory chips for the onboard video. There are silk screens for the other two, however.

What do you think the chances of a BIOS flash working for this board would be?

I have no idea whether or not it would work. If you were going to junk the board otherwise, then you have nothing to lose if it doesn't work. Hopefully it should. Even then, the BIOSes for the P2L97A are not particularly up-to-date.

1005A Final is a little old...some time back in 1998, but 1010A Beta 003is not too bad....beginning of this year.

Just found the P2L97-XV board listed in the FTP site, but no mention of it on the websites....perhaps this BIOS might be closer?

Andy,

No, I didn't junk it. I actually built my dad a system. But he's perfectly happy with a cacheless Celeron 266, so I won't worry about having to update the BIOS anytime soon. :)

OK, folks, question.

With a Celeron 266 (cachless) the board thinks it's got a P2 266, so obviously the BIOS is older.

Now, not knowing for sure if any of the BIOSes are the right ones, what's stopping me from putting a PPGA Celeron 533 in a Slotket in there? Even if it thinks it's a P2 533, it should still run it, correct? The voltages on the PPGA socketed Celerons are the same as the older Celerons (2.0V) so the V-spec should be good . . .

I guess so....but can the BIOS handle it? Multiplier is not an issue....the BIOS probably won't even be able to display the speed correctly. But the L2 cache is on-die, and a different size to the Pentium II....I don't know if you will be able to use the cache or not.
