I have two wireless mice. That way when the battery for one dies and I'm charging it I can use the other. The mystery is that when I plug the dead one into the charging cable and let the second mouse take over, I can't click on anything. The mouse pointer still moves, but nothing is clickable. The only way I can get out of this purgatory is to restart my computer. Any ideas?

If the earlier mouse isn't completely dead yet, go to device manager and remove it before you unplug it for recharging.

IMO it's a question of wireless receivers. I once had a situation where I pulled several from a customer's computer after odd symptoms like what the OP described. My advice is to only have one keyboard/mouse wireless receiver connected at a time.

Multiple (wired) mice in my experience are absolutely fine, I routinely have a wired mouse connected at the same time as my cordless mouse and it hasn't ever caused any problems.
