mysterious G drive has appeared out of nowhere

today i removed my old lite on sohw 832s dvd burner for a new lite on 1693s. i simply turned off the pc, took out the old burner and put in the new one; i did not change anything in windows before or after the exchange. i powered on and burned a couple of dvds and everything worked fine.

the new burner appeared on drive E just like the old one. however, i now have a new drive G. this is a dvd drive, but i have no idea why windows thinks i have a second dvd drive.

under device manager i see the show 1693s drive and i also see the G drive which appears as:

"Generic DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device"

when i disable the G drive in device manager it will dissappear under my computer. i tried burning and playing a couple dvds which worked fine. i then uninstalled the G drive in device manager and was still able to successfully burn and play dvds.

just to make sure the G drive is gone i restarted my computer. when i looked in my computer the phantom G drive was back!

how can i get the G drive to go away permanently?

why is the drive there? is there something else i need to change in windows to make it go away forever?

thank you.

I have a problem like this too, but mine's been around for a while. My computer says I have 3 drives, two of which are identical DVD drives. I only have one DVD drive, and it only plays DVDs. I have no idea where this drive came from, and how long it's been there.

It's odd, really.
