Mysterious driver installation problem in Win 7 - SOLVED

I've had a system running stably under Windows 7 for the last couple of years. There have been no hardware changes in that time.

Today I noticed that my DVD drive (Optiarc AD-7173S) was no longer visible.I checked Device Manager, which showed this message: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I uninstalled the drive and rebooted. Windows attempted to reinstall it but gave up with the error message: "Device driver software was not successfully installed"

I uninstalled again and went through the registry, deleting all references to the drive. There were a couple of relevant entries that initially could not be deleted, so I got rid of these with the aid of PSTools. I rebooted the PC and once again, Windows' attempt to install the drive failed.

I've also tried the whole process in safe mode.

I'd be extremely grateful for some suggestions here as I'm getting desperate.

Sounds like your registry might be corrupted, possibly due to a failing storage device or bad RAM. I would start basic hardware troubleshooting.
