First of all, here are the specs on this new computer I built for my girlfriend:
(Retail) Athlon 64 3000+ [venice]
ECS RS480-M [mini-atx motherboard]
ASPIRE X-QPACK-BL w/ 420W PS [mini-atx]
(6 Year Old) Maxtor 15gb HD
Hitachi Deskstar 160GB HD
Pioneer DVR-108
The following problems started occuring about a week after putting the computer together. I've done many system builds and I've never encountered such bizzare problems.
The first thing that began to occur was that a couple of times a day, the computer would freeze for three seconds, then the monitor would lose video signal. The computer would continue running fine, just no video signal to the monitor. There was no way to recover from this except restarting.
Later, I read somewhere online that weird problems like this could be caused by faulty USB devices. We decided to unplug the cheap-o Wal-Mart USB hub, and the problem completely went away.
Unfortunatley, a new problem has arisen that's far worse than the original one. Now, whenever she uses Photoshop (CS) and selects something with the magic select tool, the computer shuts off instantly. The alarming thing was that a picture she had worked on for dozens of hours became corrupted, but it luckily only had minor artifacts. This problem ONLY occurs with the use of the magic select tool in Photoshop CS, and on one occasion there was a windows error box with a "DISK ERROR -44."
For the love of god, what in the world could be causing this randomness?
I personally suspect that the harddrive is dying.
[Oh, and I've run Trendmicro Housecall, and the computer was clean]
