Mysterious clicking sound

When I'm on the web, at good sites that I've been to many times, my mouse suddenly freezes and I get this clicking sound, and maybe some groaning from the audio, from my box. I'm guessing that it comes from the hdd. After a while it stops and the mouse goes back to normal.
This is my old rig: 700mhz athlon on a Biostar board w/onboard graphics, 368mb sdram, 300w Fortron, cheap sound card, 25g who knows hdd, and a dvd rw. ME os. Not much, I know, but it's a good 2nd machine.
I've always kept it pretty tight: behind a router, up to date w/microsoft and Panda (the free platinum 7), adaware, spybot, spywareblaster. Nothing shows up on any scan, except for the good old data miners.
I'm thinking I need to reformat the hdd, but the system restore cd won't do it's thing (says something about it being a single system cd or something). This is my original restore cd, and it used to work, but nooooo.
My other thought was to buy another ram stick (or maybe a hdd?) and an oem copy of xp home, but the ME is good enough for this machine, so I'd just as soon stick w/it.
Anybody got any thoughts which direction I should go w/this?

Actually that is the kind of symptoms you get from the keyboard buffer being full. Might try another keyboard with the system, you may have a sticking key.

Yeah, I was worried that it could be the hdd. Ah, well, they're cheap enough these days, and there's nothin' on it that it would hurt to lose. As for reformating, I figured that wouldn't work, or hurt, but it's time and the thing won't do it. Fodder for another thread.

Keyboard buffer? That's a new one on me, but then everything computer related usually is. Now that I think about it, the keyboard was replaced, about the same time this started happening, with one of those $5 boards that're stacked up at the entrance of computer stores. I'll try swappin' with this kb and see what happens.

Either way, looks like I got an excuse to buy some new parts. Thanks for the feedback, I'll let you know.

Well, I've switched the keyboard, with a known good one. Didn't help.

No wireless mouse. Just an old ball mouse.

The groaning I described above is not exactly it, it's more of a squaakk. Something's complaining, at any rate. Doesn't happen all the time, but if your online for half an hour you'll see it.

Just bumpin' for more ideas before I R&R the hdd.

Yeah, that's what it's starting to sound like. Oh, well, there's nothing but crap on there anyway. Moved it all to my new rig last mo. Might be time to spring for an oem XP home. Hm, new hdd, a 256 stick of sdram, and xp home. Should be able to do it for under $200. On the other hand, if I stick w/the ME os I can pick up a hdd for around $50.

Anybody know if an original system restore disc will be able to load an os onto a new hdd?
