I had an idea so I checked the weather. It is currently 15F warmer in Clintonville, WI than it is here in Tucson so my idea is no good.

We have all heard of the crack of dawn, maybe this is the crack of spring?
My idea was somewhat based on this. When it is really cold (-20F and below cold) lake ice will boom as stress cracks propagate. Also, in Spring when the ice sheets break up one can sometimes hear booming but this is usually followed by large piles of ice plowed up onto shore and is somewhat obvious. In this case, it is 68F in that part of the world so neither apply.

I'm thinking turtle farts.

Thermal expansion? After all it is hitting 80 degrees up there.

edit a week long highs in the 80's from a daytime high of 30 (March 9th)a week ago, rapid thawing!

We have had abnormally high temperatures here in WI recently (~80F today) and just over two weeks ago there was snow falling from the sky. So I would give some thought to the thermal expansion theory.

Well, they do eat a lot of cheese.... that may account for it....

That was my first thought too...and beer.

As a lifelong Wisconsinite, those are two of my favorite things.

Preferred beer(s): Guinness, Mikkeller Black, Stella Artois, Kasteel Donker

Preferred cheese(s): Sartori Bellavitano, Cedar Valley string cheese (bar none, the best string cheese *ever*), any good 8yr sharp cheddar

When Lewis and Clark were traveling across the northern part of the Rocky Mountains, they heard something like booming sounds.

If I remember right, the journals said the sound sounded like canons.
