Myst Series

I've been working to get my wife interested in video games since we first met, which has proven to be an uphill struggle. The only two games she played before we met were Oregon Trail and Myst. We recently purchased a new laptop for her, and I am making one more attempt.

Q: Do the subsequent Myst titles get any easier, or at least are the puzzles more intuitive? She's getting terribly frustrated playing the first one again. As it turns out, she only vaguely remember playing it when she was younger, and I don't think she made much progress.

As an alternative, I'm looking to have her try out Syberia or Longest Journey, but I haven't tested to see if they run well on Vista. Same with some of the ScummVM titles.

I have played Orginal Myst but I haven't finished it because Myst does not run on other Windows OS so I gave up. Myst is very diffiuclt to play with. the Graphic is very nice. I don't know any Myst series will work on some windows OS. The orginal Myst I have only runs on windows 3.1

Myst 1 was pretty easy.
Myst 2 was incredibly difficult. There were complaints.
Myst 3+ varied but at one point in the series they added great hint systems. Stuff that went from mild hints to outright spoilers and you got to pick the amount of help you wanted.

There is also a full 3D version of Myst 1 out there. "RealMyst" or something to that effect. You are still confined to the rails and nodes type of movement but otherwise get full control over your camera instead of the fixed slides that are pre-rendered.

If you want other adventure games, I'd suggest some of the old Lucasarts ones (but seeing as you linked to ScummVM you probably had the same idea already.) You'll probably need to use something like ScummVM, or set up a Win98 dual-boot, to play the older ones.

Maybe look for something you could play together? Turn-based or real-time strategy games, for instance?

We picked up 10th Anniversary edition - it runs on XP, and Vista in compatibility mode. Includes Myst 2 + 3.

Maybe I'll have her jump right to Myst 3. I played through the first when I was younger, but I'll be damned if I can remember what to do, and gamefaqs completely destroys the fun of these games.

Strategy/RPG/FPS she doesn't do. Anything requiring reflexes or resource management =); kind of limits the scope. She did play some Sims, but lost interest quickly.

I did manage to get the ScummVM running on XP, and I'll try to dig out those instructions. I'm hoping she'll have as much fun with Indiana Jones / Monkey Island as I did.
