MyBook Essential or Samsung F3 in an external for a video server?

I can get a WD MyBook Essential 1TB USB (containing a Green EADS drive) or a Samsung 1TB F3 and an external enclosure for about the same price. They both would be USB2 connected to the computer. Its only use will be as a video server, through WMP12, to my DLNA compliant plasma HT display. Which would be the better choice?

Its gonna be slow slow drives because your using USB.

If it was eSATA external SATA then it would be as fast as your internal local hard drive.

USB is soo much slower. I make a image with eSATA takes 40 minutes, I do it with USB and it took 4 and half hours.. so you do the math. Do not get a external USB drive,, it will be slow as heck, and firewire isnt any better,, its still gonna be slow tahts why you need eSATA product my friend...

While I agree with you in general, that option is not really available - nor really necessary - in this case. My video development is set up to do most of its work at night. The files are rendered on to the external disk while I'm sleeping so gaining any speed in that operation doesn't really matter. As for serving to video, USB transfer served by WMP12 is more than fast enough to feed my DLNA monitor. I've never had a data dropout using this method. Adding an eSATA card to my system would be no real benefit in this case.

My interest is still in determining which of the two listed would be better. Since the drive will not be used as continuously as an OS drive I thought the Essential would be better since it spins down when not in use, but I keep hearing that the F3 is a great drive overall. And while the Essential uses an EADS Green, the warranty is not a full three years as you get if you but the drive by itself. So the F3 has a longer warranty in its favor. But I'm concerned about its constant 7200RPM speed for this kind of service.

Well I can tell you the WD MyBook will be green efficient and lower noise level then the F3 and also reliable as long as you take care of it.. ala my wdc

So go green its less power consumption as well probably 3watts or soo and it will be stable as long as its not shooken while operating and kept protected. gl

Get the lowest heat/power drive you can. Since you'll be so limited by the USB bandwidth, any extra speed will be wasted. The Samsung drives are great, but the F3 is 7200rpm, and while very low heat/power for a 7200rpm, it can't compete in that regard with a Green drive.

It's good to hear this from some one who already has one. Let me as you, though - does yours make a slight, ~1 second buzz when it powers up after having spun down? A friend has one of the newer ones (with the "capacity gauge") and it has a very short buzz when it starts back up. I have two older MyBooks (also WD10EADS jobs but in the older cases) that do not buzz when they come back up.

My friend checked the SMART data with Hard Disk Sentinel. It all checked out okay. I think I'll advise him to call WD to ask if that buzz is a new feature with the Essential. The new ones now have that odd Smartware FW in the enclosure. I wonder if that might explain the sound when it spins up?
