MyBook Essential Edition enclosure won't work

So I took a 500GB WD internal SATA drive out of it, and stuck a new 160GB Maxtor SATA drive back into it. The computer finds the USB adapter (the enclosure itself), but the actual drive doesn't appear anywhere, even after F5'ing multiple times.

Everything is connected, that has been checked. It has been tried on 3 different computers, and the same error appears. Could it be that the enclosure only works with Western Digital drives?
 
Perhaps; perhaps the drive needs to be specially formatted to work in the enclosure; perhaps the drive needs to be set to 1.5Gbps transfer rate. It's hard to know.
