My Yahoo account was hacked

So I was playing Yahoo! Pool this morning and some guy came into my game room and asked if I wanted to play for "rares". I get this question asked a lot because my account name is old and unique. I've used the Yahoo services for over 10 years now with the same account.

Anyways, the guy asking for rares cusses at me, then leaves the room and within about 10 minutes I couldn't access my account anymore. After trying to recover my password Yahoo said my account was deactivated.

This is alarming because not only is this the second time this has happend, but I do have some personal info on there. :frown:

They don't, but my username is one that you wouldn't be able to get at this point of Yahoo's age on the internet.

O, I see.
My mom's account was hacked, but she called them and got it back and hasn't had any problems since.

I already did that once, changed my password and stuff, but this is the second time now.

Dude, why don't you make your password something hard to crack. AKA put numbers and symbols in it. The guy is probably running a dictionary attack and it's guessing the password.

Make your password:
10+ letters,
at least one number
at least one capital letter
and if you want to be even more protective
make one symbol (@$^%*$, etc)
That's even hash-uncrackable

I had letters and numbers, and honestly, I'd prefer not to have to type in a 10 character password with symbols and crap every time I want to check my email. It's not some common phrase or word either.

Either way, if and when I do get access to it again, I'm deleting everything and canceling the account.

You would think Yahoo would have additional security to be able to deactivate or change a password on an account.

Then get one of those fingerprint readers that will automatically enter your password whenever you enter their site (or, FTW, just have your browser remember your password for you, much like you can for Amazon, or Anandtech, or anywhere else that has a "Remember Me" feature).

So you still haven't answered the only question people care about. What is the username? We want to see what makes it so special

Lol, I'm nervous to even put it out there right now. Let me first see if I can even get it back.

First get the keystroke logger off your machine. :)

No sense typing in your new password only to have it given away by malware.

Thats actually a good point (even if you weren't entirely serious)

Have you checked for Malware?

I have anti-virus and periodically run programs like Ewido Security and Ad-Aware. Would any of that track it down?
