I just created a file server using XP Pro for my home.

There is a share that has 1323 files it in (all mp3's) when accessing it from the network from another XP Pro machine it takes about 10-15 second to display all files.

Perhaps a tweak to fix this?

EDIT: when i try to access a share with about 50 files it is quick.

Thanks,
Bob

Write down the numbers from 1 to 50. Then write down the numbers from 1 to 1323. Let us know how long it takes to do each one. ;)

Seriously, listing a directory that large over the network will take a while no matter what you do. 10-15 seconds to display a listing that big is actually a pretty reasonable amount of time.

In some places, file = folder. He meant opening a folder with 1323 mp3's in there will take a long time to open.

listing them takes time. I would suggest busting it up into subfolders. that will increase the speed dramatically. Only big downside to this, is it will ruin your old playlists. they don't have the subfolders in the path, and they won't work.

You guys are all completely wrong here and not helping this guy out at all. I have had the same issues before and it generally has to do with cacheing and/or offline files. Try the following things and let me know if you have any success.

-under tools->folder options->view check the box "Do not cache thumbnails." Depending on how you have the view setup for the folder, this may help.

-under tools->folder options->Offline Files DISABLE Offline Files.

I have a shared folder from my file server that has over 1100 directories and there is no delay what so ever.
