My XClio 450BL Power Supply is whining while pc is off

My XClio 450BL Power Supply is whining while pc is off, I'm assuming it needs replaced. I was leaning towards the CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX. My rig specs are in my sig.

I know about the lectures and cheap psu's on high end pc's, etc but are there any lower cost alternatives?

I'm willing to bet you have a substantial +5VSB load.

Unplug your USB crap and see if the whining goes away.

If so, what motherboard do you have?

the only usb stuff i have is my logitech mx duo and an external 3.5" ide drive. EDIT: both are externally powered also.

The mobo is a MSI Neo2-FR. I just noticed the whining today so it has started within the last few weeks.

Did you unplug them to see if the whining went away?

YOUR XCLIO is about to blow a capacitor or three. Trust me.

I don't trust you. 😉

Sounds more like the noise is coming from a transformer whining than a cap. The cap would whistle at a higher load, not so much so while the PC is in standby.

I had the exact same PSU... Started whining when I turned it off... So I just ended up opening it up and there were three capacitors nicely bulged, oozing and ready to go... lol

My first thought was a bad cap as well. It could be whining a different pitch under load but I can't hear it over my fans. I have not unplugged my USB devices as there is only one, my mouse. My USB HDD is off and unplugging it does nothing.

I never said it wasn't a leaking cap. These XClio's were made by CWT and probably have Fuhjyyu caps in them which means it's a ticking time bomb. I just think it's premature to just assume that's the problem.

Given that the USB mouse is the only potential +5VSB load and it just started doing this, ok... it can be a leaking cap. Is it under warranty? If not, go ahead and open it up and have a look. Caps that are buldging/leaking so bad that the unit whistles should be pretty damn obvious.

i ordered the CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX, i'll open it up soon.

I just checked my old newegg invoices and this unit still may be under warranty! Too bad I already ordered a replacement. O-well, a spare never hurt!
