So my 360 is old. It doesnt have an HDMI port. I'm going to sell it on craigslist.

Do newer xbox's come with the HDMI cable? Should i return this HDMI cable i just bought or keep it because i'll need it?

The newer 360s do not come with an HDMI cable. Either keep the cable or buy a cheap replacement from monoprice.

Just note that while any HDMI cable will work, you will need to buy the 360 specific one to use optical and HDMI at the same time, since it comes with the adapter.

No you don't. There have been many posts about this. You just need to crack open the A/V case so you have enough room to use both.

break apart the component cable shroud and plug the hdmi cable in right next to it.

They stopped shipping them with the consoles afaik.

Not only that, they also stopped providing the component cable set. That's important to the OP if he wants to use optical audio, because the composite cable set does not have the optical output.

OP, are you selling the old 360 because you've run out of component inputs, or because your TV's component inputs suck, or because you think HDMI will just look better? (or because you want to watch upscaled DVDs, or some other reason)

Why is it so important to you to have a 360 with HDMI? Explain yourself.

Agreed. Only thing you'll get out of an HDMI cable is the convenience of having audio and video through one cable.

Seems like your putting your self through way more of a hassle for no added benefit.

That being said, knowing that HDMI and component Picture quality is the same, I still make sure I connect through HDMI.

HDMI = 1080p. If he's streaming/downloading any of the movies from the Zune Video store, using HDMI will be the only way to get 1080p.

According to Xbox, the VGA and Component cables, are also capable of 1080P output.

VGA yes. Component...games only and there are only a handful of TVs that accept 1080p over component. The majority do 720p or 1080i.

I was under the impression that in order for your 360 to upconvert DVDs to 720p or higher you need an HDMI cable to be HDCP compliant.

hdmi cables are so cheap, is there any reason not to?

I put everything I can on hdmi just to have less cable clutter.

I run component and it does 1080p but like other people have said, you cant upconvert to 1080p. But i think it still upconverts to 1080i thought i could be wrong.

My XBox plays all DVDs at 480p over component. I have an older (non-HDMI) one. Games all play at 1080p.

That said, I don't know what the big deal is, unless the XBox's scaler is far superior to what's used in most TVs now.
