my rig is my sig. My roomates computer is a 754 3200+ newcastle with 1gb of 400mhz ram and a 6600gt agp all running at stock.

He plays the fear demo with no stuttering although it is as the lowest quality and resolution.

I play it on my computer and it stutters. so i'm like fine, i'll just turn down some of the settings. the autodetect put everyting on high and maximum.

put everything to low and minimum and it still stutters! his 6600gt is killing me.

One other factor: my windows pagefile is not on the same hard drive as windows. It's on my second hard drive and i put it on that drive when it was empty so it's at the beginning of the drive. could this be an issue?

hmmm, yours should smack his 6600GT about the head...what drivers are you running? Try reinstalling the latest ones i guess to start with. I can't see why you'd have your pf on the slower drive tho that shouldn't affect this...

many tweaker guides say putting the PFile on a second hard drive helps because programs can read data from both hardrives at the same time instead of waiting for the hardrive to seek back and forth between two different destinations.

maybe it's my ram? i believe it's running at 205 (410mhz effective) with my overclock. I've been told stuttering is because of RAM limitations, but there is not stuttering when i play battlefield 2 at all. And I play that game with a mix of medium and high settings.

I'll try putting everything back to stock and see what happens.

Might also try a separate sound card. Try setting sound to low and see if that works. The builtin sound could eat up CPU cycles.
Also try disabling other programs/services running on the side.
Then try borrowing his card and see if it still stuttering.
Does it stutter with no overclock also?

Are you going by his word that it plays fine? "Fine" is very subjective. There is no way yours should be getting lower frames than his. Also, are you sure you are both running the exact same settings? There are many settings, in the game, and drivers that can have a large impact on performance.

I saw him playing the game. It does look like crap. all low settings, but it plays smooth! totally acceptable to him. looks like nintendo 64 graphics. But it's smooth! no breakups or stuttering.

My card stutters even at lowest resolution and lowest settings for cpu and video card.

Also, seeing someone play a game, then playing it yourself are two different things.

As you can see, the XL is faster than the GT in F.E.A.R. Especially with AA/AF; http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/fear_performance_mainstream/page8.asp

I still don't think i'm getting my piont accross. I set my settings below his. I set my x800xl settings to look like crap also. I set it at the lowest resultion, lowest physics and graphics settings and everything. And his runs smooth, but mine still stutters when I walk around corners and move quickly.

It might be a driver/game incompatibility or an external issue. Try swapping video cards, if you can.

run 3dmark05 and aquamark on both PCs to see if you get a reasonable score (I think around 5000 for x800xl, less then 4000 for 6600gt)

Or maybe because it's a demo?

Anyone of you have retail? If your x800 xl performs fine in all the other games, then I'm willing to bet it's due to demo instability.

The demo stutters a lot, while the full version does not really stutter for me (X850XT PE). Going from 1GB to 2GB of RAM helped too.

Wow that's really strange behavior. 5500 for X800XL is damn fine. Yeah it definitely seems to be the demo that's at fault. You wouldn't happen to have a retail version around would you?

nah, but i really hate this cause my friend thinks he's all that because he just got his 6600gt (i recconded this to him) for 100 bucks used. I got mine about 4 months ago used for 200.

Now he's rubbing it in my face telling me that my card is shait because his runs that little demo and mine can't. Gets on my freakin nerves. I might buy the retail version just to shut him up.
