My X31 won't run the external monitor at its native resolution!

I know for a fact that the x31 can support external monitors well past 1280 x 1024. But I can't get it to run my external monitor at anything above the 1024 x 768 that the laptop's own screen runs at. I went to display settings and even when I select the multiple monitors thing, both the external screen and the laptop's own screen are being considered the same - i.e., when I tell windows to identify screen "1", a "1" appears on both the laptop screen as well as the external flat-screen.

help, please!
