My x1800xt seems a little too hot

My x1800xt idles at 62 C and reaches 83 C at full load. I know GPUs get hotter than CPUs but this seems a little extreme to me. I'm using the stock cooler, but I've done no overclocking at all. Is this typical, and if not, is my card about to melt?

i would guess it is typical, lots of 1900gt cards are the same way with stock coolers, and 1800xt and 1900gt are at very similar speeds, stock cooling usually sucks so i would suggest getting an gpu cooler. I went with a zalman vf900, i have a review on my website so check it out. hope that helps

those are average temps for an x1800xt. although it'd be fine to run it at those temps for a long time, it makes me uncomfortable when the load temp gets closer to 90C
i replaced my x1900xt cooling with a vf900 and its mounted upside down in a lian li case and now my x1900xt idles at 37C while my 4800x2 with ninja idles at 35

Install ATi Tray Tools and take a look at the fan speed ramp schedule. By default I don't think the fan speed goes to 100% (leaf blower) until the temps reach 95C.

Where's this fan speed setting? I got the tray tools but I can't find it. I've started getting random artifacts (a corrupted frame every 15 or so minutes), but only when the GPU is on full load.

To Bob: It's in the CCC under ATI Overdrive.

Hardware -> Overclocking Settings -> "Fan" tab

Be sure to use the latest version of Tray Tools. Some earlier versions may not support the X1800/X1900 cards due to lack of information.

I can't actually get to the overclocking settings. It just says "Overclocking Disabled".

Open the atitray.ini file in your ati tray tools install directory, make sure the line: opt_disable_ovr=0 is not set to 1. I believe by default it asks you to leave overclocking disabled during the installation.
