my wireless keeps disconnecting

ok, I know it's some kind of virus or something... when it's idle is says 54mbps but as soon as I load a page it drops down to 11mbps. ALWAYS.

It also disconnects every few minutes briefly. I reformatted a few months back and this solved the problem for a short while. I would like to fix it without formatting. Is this possible or is it SOL?

TIA.

i'm running windows XP old version. The service packs just fuck up my PC. I'm such a networking noob :/

what else can I add about the problem? I don't know, ask questions I suppose.

try changing the channel on the wireless router. You might have interference. Check to see if you have any other 2.4GHz wireless devices like cordless phones and X10 wireless camera around the house.

its worth noting some 2.4 phones have channel selection, so its worth using 1, 6 or 11 for the wifi, and one of the remaining two for the phones if you can. i had to do this at my parents place.
