My wireless card doesnt want to connect

I've tried both a 3com and DLINK PCMCIA card on my hp laptop and it barely holds a connection. I took a laptop from work (Toshiba Centrino) w/ built-in wifi and it works perfectly. No need to tell the laptop to scan for an access point unlike what I have to go through with my HP.

If i had the money I'll purchase a new laptop but I'm short on funds. So, having said that, would it be better to purchase one of those mini-pci card to go inside my laptop? It has room for one, but I'm not sure if it would help. Also, something about an antenna?

The laptop is a Pavilion ze4427wm (ze4400 series).

Are you using XP to configure the connection or the adapter software?

BTW, I guess Vonage referral's are no longer permitted.
