My WinXP Pro is causing major problem, I can't log on...

My system first of all dropped the sound. Windows gave me a warning saying that the sound was in use (it wasn't). It then showed both my CDROM and CDRW in explorer but could not access them at all. I tried uninstalling all sound, cdrom/rw related software and even removed them from the default profile and rebooted seeing if windows would reinstall/correct my problems. It did not. I checked all connections and cables. I inserted my WinXP Pro CD into the cdrom drive and rebooted thinking I could run the cd if it really was a software problem because I would boot to the cd before windows loads. This seems to have worked but then it required my administrator password. It will not accept my password. I had this written down so I'm positive it is correct. No one else uses this system (I live alone) so I can't see how it changed. Norton AV2002 has seen no traces of virus.

Is there a way (regedit?) to clear and put in a new administrator password?

Is there another way I can get back my cdrom/rw and sound?

The system will not even allow me to use the restoration points.

Help!!!!
Phil
