It won't play anything, not movies, music, wavs, nothing! It always says it's searching for a codec, I wait, it crashes. I check Windows Update and there is nothing to get. I got the latest DivX, nothing. I have to use REAL PLAYER FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!!! AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there anyway to uninstall Windows Media Player? It's my favorite player but I don't know why it isn't working. Previous to this problem, I couldn't stream mpgs, mpegs, avi's, but only .wmvs. WTF?!?!?!?!

You might need to get the Xvid codec and AC3 sound codec. I had the same problem when I first upgraded to WMP9. Hope this helps.

Do you remember doing anything to your system around the time it broke? Maybe use system restore, or uninstall other media player programs.

And why is this in Off Topic??

have you tried simply reinstalling without uninstalling it?

Hmm, not a bad idea.

Nope, didn't work. I think I want to reformat anyway, I want to get Windows 98 partitioned on here anyway.

I'm screwed. I can't System Restore for some reason, none of the points work and I've just figured out that that was the only way to uninstall it, system restore. Currently, I can't play anything in WMP, not even .wmvs and nothing but WMP will play that. I'm very pissed off and I don't know what to do, I've tried to delete the contents of the WMP folder, nothing, tried deleting the entire folder, nothing, tried reinstalling over the current installation, nothing. Trying to play videos brings up memory errors. My only option is to reformat it looks but that's a tad drastic to fix one application.

You could go around installing any codec pack you can find... I had a similar problem to yours and I used a stupid crude solution and it worked... I just found a bunch of codec packs, installed them all, and it worked... maybe start with the Nimo codec pack... google it.

Nope, Nimo didn't work either. I don't know of any other codecs besides DivX and Nimo that would be required. My WMP is totally fuct right now, I can't play ANYTHING, it's totally corrupt and there's no way to fix it! I can't even system restore! AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So yeah, I talked to Microsoft via chat (really cool new feature) and they walked me through it. I just had to create a new account along with clearing out my cache and reinstalling WMP9. God bless Microsoft. 😀

My last problem is that I can't stream anything but .wmv's and .wav's. Mpeg's and mpg's just lock up. I don't believe Avi's can be streamed at all. Any ideas?
