my windows 2000 and indows 98se comps cant connect to Windows xp box?

help me out please! I am settign up a little home network and I cant figure out whats going on. I have a Windows 200 laptop and windows 98Se box that WILL not connect to my windows xp box. It shows up int he network, but when i try to connect I get an error and It wont let me connect. BUt I can connect from the windows XP box just fine to the winodws 98SE box and drag files to and from it. My Windows 2000 box cant connect to either of them??? Sometimes they will show up in the network places and sometimes they wont at all ( in fact it will tell me that the computer cant log on to the network!!)

by connect, do you mean share files on network neighborhood ? is the error you see is somekind dialog asking for password and username ? if yes, you need to turn off simple file sharing in windows xp, and gives access (whether it's read / write / both) to everyone sid group on win2000 box. Also be sure you have file and printer sharing for microsoft network enabled on both w2k and xp box.

Make all of the usernames and passwords the same on every computer. Something like this happened to me before and then I did the above then it worked. I am 90% sure this will work.

also make sure the computer names are 9X friendly (i.e. short, 8 characters iirc)


Best practices for file sharing on XP (if it's pro) is to turn off the simple file sharing. On the folder's sharing tab (in properties) give the "Everyone" group full access, and then use the Security tab to really set the permission on users/groups. Remember that the "Denied" overrides the "allowed". i.e. if UserA is in GroupB, and you give group B full access, but give userA denied access, the denied will trump the allowed.
