My wife's Nexus 5 has more keyboard themes than mine?

Both are Nexus 5 phones, both running the latest version of Android.

On my phone, if I go into Settings > Language & input > Google Keyboard, my phone is missing one category of options that my wife's phone has:

"Appearance & Layouts"

In there, my wife has an option for 'Theme', for which she can pick: "Material light", "material dark", "holo white", "holo blue".

On my phone, if I go into "Preferences", then "Theme", I can pick "Material light" and "Material dark".

The only differences that I'm immediately aware of between my wife's configuration and mine is that she has an English and another regional keyboard layout configured on her phone, whereas I just have English. The other difference is that while both of our phones have been factory resetted recently, mine was already on the latest version of Android before the reset, whereas my wife's phone was acting so squirrely that I thought it was best to hard reset then upgrade from 4.4.4 to 6.0.1.

I'm guessing that the difference in menu layouts is purely because I've altered some other setting on my phone (I've enabled developer mode for example), but I can't think of anything relevant to this.

Google Keyboard is rolling out an update for more themes. However, this sounds like a different issue and could be a byproduct of the Kitkat to Marshmallow upgrade? (even though that sounds unlikely).

I'm just sticking the latest app updates on my phone, but the keyboard app wasn't one of them (Google, Google+, Google Photos).

The newest update to the Google Keyboard removes the Holo themes.

Do you know how recent that update was? My wife's phone was up-to-date as of maybe 48 hours ago. I'll try rolling back the app on my phone and see if that does it.

- edit - that did the trick. I'll give my wife a heads-up about that update as she prefers the holo themes I think.

Google likes to roll out their updates in phases, so not everyone gets them right away. It's possible your wife's phone got the update while your phone has not yet received it.
