And I still won't get any tonight. :(

(Presents include the rocking chair and the entire flower garden)

Maybe it's just me but a rocking chair conveys "You're getting old honey, so I got a special chair just for you."

It's because the rest of your lawn is a barren wasteland. Get some trees, bushes, hedges, anything!

My Dad used to always help us kids plant a flower garden for my Mom on Mother's Day. Looking back, I have no idea why. Every year, we'd spend the morning planting them and then nobody gave a second thought to them again. Tradition, I guess.

Now that I'm out of the house, a phone call generally suffices. Until I get married, that is!

Agreed. I hate how every tree is cut down in a lot of neighborhoods these days.

Definitely. I remember when my folks built one house that they kept some of the old trees in the backyard. Nothing was better than that old oak the size of a house.

The next neighborhood we moved to was built in stages. The oldest at the entrance to the subdivision was probably twenty years old and had tree lined streets. But when you hit the new subdivision... nothing... At best you had saplings along the curb. It sucks that you have to wait a few decades for the landscaping to catch up.

I'm not really in the market to buy a house right now but when I do, I think I'm going to want to move into an established neighborhood in the city. My sister lives about 50 miles outside of the metro area and is always talking about these trees they just planted in their yard. Yeah, they are nice and all but it's going to take 20 years for them to mature! The tree-lined streets of an established neighborhood are a pretty big draw to me.

Does it matter that one of the gifts she had been hinting at for the last several months has been a nice wood rocking chair for the porch?

It's because the rest of your lawn is a barren wasteland. Get some trees, bushes, hedges, anything!

Which is why we started the little garden in the front porch (another thing she - and I both - have been wanting for a while). The trees in the yard happen next round.

Very thoughtful of you. I hope she appreciated it all.

Is your wife an old grandmother or you just need someone to keep the kids off the lawn while you are not there?

Well now you have a place to get flowers for a emergency gift for the next few mothers day, anniversary and birthdays when you forget them. :p

I have the exact same rocking chair sitting in my garage waiting for a couple coats of paint.

I don't think they're cut down as much as they just aren't there. Lots of subdivisions built on old farmland.

Yeah that's the trend in most places. Farmers sell off their land piece by piece for millions of dollars to developers. But first they strip all that nice top-soil off and sell it too.

Yeah, our area used to be all farmland. Though it never had 'nice' topsoil here... it's all that crappy red clay.

What's cool about it is that you took the time and made the effort, much better than just going to the store and buying flowers.
