Certainly, it would be a difficult task to address. However, even on short notice, one would think that someone who is in that line of work would have drafted some kind of framework or words that they could draw on that hold universal meaning and appeal to people who've lost someone suddenly, or slowly.
Therein lays the rub. From these forums you can readily tell that not all backgrounds, customs and, perspectives are the same or even vaguely akin. So, many settle for common ground by reading from the 'book.' Some attempt to work in current events or shared difficulties in living. It seems in the OP's wife's case, it didn't go over.
